Hi i was just wondering what sort of weight and other targets you could suggest for the start of season? 1m currently 160lb and 6ft tall, id like to play somewhere like safety but think im a bit small. with only 8 weeks or so to go should i be concentrating on building mass or speed and if so can you suggest any targets?

Cheers,

Eddie

Hey Eddie,

I think the best thing for you to do in the next 8 weeks would be to try and put some weight on. We can get fast and lean through the drills and conditioning we do at training.

If you wanted some direction for this feel free to email our fitness secretary who can help you out. Use his pm (http://warwickwolves.freeforums.org/member49.html). If you dont get a reply he may be on holiday and ill be able to help you out.

Cheers,

a bit small for safety?! You should have seen the db's we had last year. Im 5" 11' and 170 pounds and Im hoping to play safety but think they'll tell me im too big and should stick at lb or go on the line.

ah ok thanks for the advise. what ill probably do then is try and gain some mass (and not give up just yet) but ensure that its fairly lean and that i can still run a bit, maybe doing drills once a week. my target for the end of summer was always 170+lbs so ill try and hit that.

Thanks again, see you in september.

Eddie.

Dont worry about positions yet. Id no idea about any of the postions except QB and WR when I first joined then next thing I knew I was placed as a LB. When you get training you'll have a better idea when you can compare with other people.

In uni league you'll be put in a position depending on what you can do. If you can't tackle you won't be a linebacker, if you can't catch you shouldn't be a WR etc. At this level almost anyone will be able to play anywhere if they learn the position, practice hard and gain the skills required. Obviously size can make up for lack of skill to some degree, or else I would have never played.

The first training session of the year (the free taster session) usually involves everyone trying out all positions, so you can see what you're suited for. You can discuss with the coaches and other players what's best for yo based on that, so I wouldn't stress about positions too much :)

And whatever you do, don't do what I did and get coerced into doing fell running over the summer and lose all the weight you managed to gain!!! :D

Has someone put you in a grow-bag over the summer? 5'11, that's a good one

The only thing I can recommed is to hit the gym as much as possible before the season starts. I've been training 5/6 times per week and have managed to put on 7Kg(14lbs) since I started 4 weeks ago.
Worry about positions when you get there.
